• Appearance

  Inspired after Ariel, Dana has the same vibrant red hair and greenish blue eyes. However, she is much younger, looking around 13-16. Dana is not a mermaid but a human, and instead of trying to escape the sea, she is dragged into it.

  

• The Prince

  When she looked at him, the waves washed over her, pulling her under glass green and ocean grey. Suddenly, she realized the feeling wasn't figurative. Suddenly, she realized she was drowning, and the sun ran far away. The rose gold sky flew her by, and the curve of her back brushed the ocean sands.
  
  The prince disappeared.
  
  Danna's body buckled on itself, begging for breath. She could no longer see the light, the ocean floor remained illuminated only by its glowing populace. It was in her delirious fear that she could not tell whether her cheeks were wet by water or tears. It was a world where her screams would not be heard, and her weeping is not seen. Danna's mind fathomed only the darkest thoughts, but it was a sudden warmth that made her eyes flicker open. A pair of arms other than her own warped around her waist. Danna's knees scrapped across the sands as she turned herself around in this gentle hold. The face that disappeared with the sky bore itself to her vision. Danna gasped as he drew close. His eyelids caressed her cheeks, and his lips borne a human warmth. Amidst the coldness, his embrace became a refuge. His kiss felt like an infinity. Her lungs were filled with the life of this world. And with the parting of his lips, she could breathe again.
  
  Her heart beat fast. Her vibrant red hair contrasted his dark mane. From the golden markings on his chest to the translucent tips of his fingers, Danna was able recognize him. He was her king, the ruler of his realm.
  
  The prince of the sea gazed silently back at her. He carried himself with a monarchic grace, but his eyes were that of a curious child. Stepping back, he greeted her with a bow.
  
  A pleasure. He smiled.

• Her Letter

  Dana is a timid child. She enjoys literature and poetry, but in her time, girls who could do such things were not appreciated. Helplessly clumsy, she ruins meals when she cooks, and stretch the fabrics when doing laundry. During the annual drawing, when the announcer held Danna's name slip in his hands, none complained. She was swept off her feet, forced to wear the heavy silken robes, and a silver rod chained to her ankle. She could not find the faces of her parents as she was tossed into the waves.
  
  Flailing helplessly, being crushed the ocean and it's tides, Danna was sure she would not see the light of day again. As she drunk the salty contents of the sea, her struggling gradually stopped, and her vision blurred. At some point within the hazy glow of the sun, she saw a figure.
  
  He was like a mirage, and quickly vanished.

• Synopsis

  The idea for Danna was inspired by both Ariel and an article (I cannot remember the title). The article was about a small village which upheld a tradition of drawing names annually. The person chosen was stoned to death. I decided instead of stoning, the girl chosen would be given as a sacrifice to the prince of the sea, a deity. They do this to avoid their village, which is settled next to the sea, to be flooded. Many do not believe in this legend, but the old wise men who were much respected, sought to keep this ritual.
  
  Now what happened to all the other girls that were thrown into sea before Danna? Well, they were eaten. The "prince" that rescued Danna in the sea was not actually the deity in the legend, but his brother. Then begins a terrible game of hide and seek that puts forward of their lives.
